My name is Tjeerd Vis although most know me as Tseard, my Frisian name. I am 20 years of age and hail from one of the Frisian 11 Cities; Sleat.
Ljouwert to me has never been that special, as the locals tend to move away from the Frisian roots. The thing that keeps my interest in Leeuwarden is that while the locals have somewhat forsook their culture, the city isn’t so easily changed.
I don’t take a bus in Ljouwert, opting instead to walk to school along one of the the large moats, the small river is important to me, as Frisia can be summarized into three things Frisian dirt, Frisian blood and Frisian water. While the city might not be as connected to the rest of Frisia, the water running here has likely been in Sleat and the other Frisian 11 Cities. It is my place to get away from it all.
I believe culture, language and history is one of the building blocks of a person and a people. For that same reason I hope to keep that culture alive, and the only way to do that is to talk about it.
